Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe

The Patroness of Mexico and All The Americas

Small Bronze Bas-relief Triptych

Deeply loved throughout New Mexico, the traditional image of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe is found in many homes and churches, on post cards, souvenir statuettes and medals, printed on banners and scarves. My own interpretation of the familiar ikon differs primarily in the placement of figures.

Juan Diego, the peasant to whom Nuestra Senora is believed to have appeared, is usually depicted kneeling at her feet. I have placed him in the side panel to the left. The right side panel is of Santiago. I'd never before seen him represented in artistic versions of La Guadalupana, but was aware of the legend which fosters tales of Conquistadores that he appeared among their ranks of calvary during the conquest of Mexico. Wanting to create a triptych, I found Santiago the perfect companion for Nuestra Senora and Juan Diego. Visitors to my studio have often elected to have only the central panel of Guadalupe, and I cast the bronze in both versions -- the singular Madonna and the triptych.
