Bacigalupa's CASA BACI

Self Portrait 1958

For Lack of a Model

Self Portrait, oil on canvas, 1958
Private Collection, USA

Always reluctant to paint self portraits, I have on occasion -- particularly when finances were strained, fees for models not available -- used myself for study of physiognomy.

The feeling that self portraits are a kind of narcissism has persisted. I prefer the challenge of looking into the faces of others, solving not only the academic disciplines of likeness but finding the psyches behind the masks we wear.
