Figures and Landscape, oil on canvas, 1955
Private Collection, USA
Despite numerous requests to offer a literal explanation of the painting, I have never succeeded in forming one. Subject matter evolved strictly from a search for form and color, at which I worked hard. The luminosity of the work can be credited to use of the Maroger Medium, an Old Masters painting formula expounded by Monsieur Jacques Maroger with whom I studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art.
Many people have attempted to analyze the painting, the diverse attitudes of the figures, surreal aspect of the landscape. Some seek to prob the subconscious which produced it. I am pleased that its collector never sought such answers.
