Bocca Di Magra, oil on canvas, 1951
Private Collection
When our family -- mother, father, five children ranging in age from 16 years down to 2 months -- spent the summer of 1969 at Bocca di Magra, the site was still a small unexploited haven of the Italian Riviera. The pensione where we stayed served as guest quarters for only Italian families other than ourselves.
This painting, I think, expresses the abandonment of care, joy we knew there. It was purchased by a collector very soon after I'd finished it, the reproduction being from an old photograph.
