CARNIVALE II, oil on panel, 1955, 24" x 48"
Private Collection
Figure strongly influenced by classical Renaissance studies, and by Italian musical, dramatic, cultural traditions. Verdi's opera of the masked ball, the Pedrolino of pantomine, the harlequins and the clown Pagliacci. Not least, the great Carnivale of Venice, that annual pre-Lenten festa when the quays and canals of La Serenissima are crowded with colorful costumes and exotic masks. The figure in this painting, unmasked, sprang from my love of Italian stile, that incomparable ability to make fantasy a reality.
