REQUIEM, oil on panel, 1955, 16" x 20"
Collection of the artist
After nearly half a century, I still can't say what this painting truly represents, explain its meaning. When I painted it, striving for form, line and color, I wasn't conscious of wanting to portray subject matter, any theme. Over the years, I've come to acknowledge that the architectural unit may be a confessional "box," the light entering its top may be a symbol of absolution. I've still no explanation for the central figure, which appears to be collapsed on marionette strings, or the two figures flanking it. The shrouded figures in the background seem to be mourning, and perhaps that's why I settled on the title Requiem.
